My cat got my blue bird mother bird 2008/06/06 16:40
At this point I really am totally up set with my cat. I had a Blue Bird family make nest in my blue bird box and layed their eggs already. I found feathers near the nest all over the ground and I'm almost sure It was mama Blue Bird. I have been out all mornning watching for her and I do see the male and it seems to be calling for her. What do i do...I am so up set that I was crying and wanted to take my black cat to the SPCA!!! He is an out side cat. He chose to be.

First of all, welcome to the site and my condolences on the loss of the mother bird. How very sad. Cats are major hunters and can be very quick. Does your cat have a collar? Put a bell on him. He will be pretty offended and likely try to take off the collar but at least he will be less likely to strike again. He most likely caught her while she was on the ground looking for bugs.

Have the eggs hatched? If they have, there are agencies you can contact about caring for orphaned birds. They will want you to bring in the babies as carefully as possible and as soon as possible. You probably will want to call them even if they haven't hatched to see what they want you to do. I suggest looking online under "bird rescue" in your area or even calling the humane society to get a lead on where to call.

I know how sad you feel for the father. It is so very sweet to see a bluebird couple and their devotion to each other. He may come back to your box again though, so don't give up hope and take the box down. After you have made sure there are no babies or taken care of the babies that are there, you can clean the nest out of the box and see if anyone comes again. Also, if you are in the habit of feeding the birds, you could try some of the suet recipes that are posted here on the site to entice the bluebirds back.

Above all, try not to dwell on how sad you are and try not to be too discouraged by the cat. He was doing what was programmed into him to do. I'm sure you will have a better experience with your box for another family. Please keep us posted as to what happens.
