Birds are great to feed, not at all finicky like cats. If you put it out, they will come. I have personally found that my birds enjoy the mixes that have sunflower seed and safflower seed. To attract the finches, particularly the gold finches, the tubular feeders with thistle work especially well. I haven't put out the thistle yet, but keep saying that I will soon.
This was the first winter that I put out suet and the reason why I did was because Kroger had a sale on the hangers and suet cakes! I was thrilled with the results though, because that was what initially attracted Mr. B and also what attracted the pair of mockingbirds to the deck. Soon I discovered a
recipe for making suet that the birds have approved of wholeheartedly.
Of course the hummingbirds are happy with the usual 1 in 4 mix of sugar to water. I have heard from a new convert to feeding birds, Holli, that her hummingbirds prefer her homemade nectar to the storebought kind. I can understand that though...who doesn't prefer a home-cooked meal?
